Inspired by her time living in her late father's century-old home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Sunny War's Armageddon In A Summer Dress is a deeply personal and thought-provoking exploration of memory, identity and transformation. Initially believing the house to be haunted after experiencing strange sounds and visions, Sunny later discovered that gas leaks had caused the hallucinations. While this revelation changed her understanding of those experiences, it only strengthened the album's central themes of loss, self-reflection and the lingering ghosts of past lives.

Following the success of her acclaimed 2022 album Anarchist Gospel and tours with artists including Bonnie Raitt and Mitski, Sunny channelled her creative energy into writing and experimentation. Moving from acoustic to electric guitar, she crafted a richer, fuller sound that seamlessly blends punk's rebellious spirit with the storytelling traditions of American roots music. Tracks such as One Way Train and No One Calls Me Baby showcase this evolution, while Walking Contradiction features a memorable guest appearance from Steve Ignorant of Crass, reflecting Sunny's long-standing admiration for the band's uncompromising social commentary.
