Formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1987 as Baphomet, Banished emerged from the formative US death metal scene alongside fellow New Yorkers Suffocation and Immolation. Following the Morbid Realities demo in 1989, the band released its debut album, The Dead Shall Inherit, through Peaceville Records in 1992, establishing a reputation for uncompromising, brutal death metal.

After changing their name to Banished, the same line-up entered Mark Studios in spring 1993 to record Deliver Me Unto Pain. Released by Deaf/Peaceville Records in 1994, the album delivered crushing riffs, relentless aggression and the raw brutality that had defined the band's sound.

Well received within extreme metal circles, Deliver Me Unto Pain became the band's final album before Banished disbanded in 1995. Both Banished and Baphomet have since retained cult status among death metal fans. The album's striking and controversial cover artwork was created by renowned comic-book artist Tim Vigil.
