Formed in Montreal, eight-piece funk band Cane and Abel fused Caribbean rhythms with soul, blues and psychedelic rock to create a distinctive sound driven by the commanding vocals of frontman Frenchie Thompson. Backed by a powerful horn section that included former Dragonaires trumpeter Norris Ridguard, the group quickly established itself as one of Canada's most exciting funk acts of the early 1970s.

After releasing a series of early singles on GRT Records, Cane and Abel signed with Epic Records and relocated to the United States. Although they enjoyed international success, it was in France where they made their greatest impact, recording two albums in 1972. This sought-after self-titled release features standout originals including "Girl You Move Me" and "Who's Gonna Take the Weight", alongside spirited interpretations of Wilson Pickett's "Don't Knock My Love", "Green Grass" and "Toe Hold". Long regarded as a hidden gem of the funk era, Cane and Abel is an essential addition for collectors of classic soul, funk, rare groove and early 1970s vinyl.
