What Is RSD Black Friday? Everything You Need to Know

If you love records, discovering new music and spending time in independent record shops, you may already be familiar with Record Store Day. But did you know there is another date in the calendar that gives music lovers another chance to celebrate independent record shops and get their hands on some very special releases?

RSD Black Friday is the sister event to Record Store Day, bringing a selection of exclusive and limited edition records to independent record shops. In 2026, RSD Black Friday takes place on Friday 27th November, and we are very excited to be taking part for the first time at Vinyl Audio Café.

So, what exactly is RSD Black Friday, and what makes it different from the usual Black Friday?

A Different Kind of Black Friday

When most people hear the words Black Friday, they probably think of big discounts, online shopping and crowded shops. RSD Black Friday is a little different.

Rather than being about reducing prices on everything in sight, it is about celebrating music, vinyl and the independent record shops that help keep physical music culture alive.

The event gives artists and record labels the opportunity to put out special releases, while giving independent record shops another opportunity to welcome music lovers through their doors. It is a chance to find something a little different, browse the racks, talk about music and perhaps discover a record you did not even know you needed.

Record Store Day describes Black Friday as its sister event, with special releases made available exclusively through independent record shops. It offers a welcome alternative to the usual Black Friday shopping frenzy, putting music and record collecting at the centre of the day.

What Can You Expect From RSD Black Friday?

The biggest attraction for many people will, of course, be the records.

RSD Black Friday releases are produced in limited quantities, with special editions and titles that you may not find as part of the normal record shop stock. Previous Black Friday releases have included everything from classic albums and reissues to new releases and special editions from some of the biggest names in music.

The range is one of the things that makes events like this so exciting. Whether you are into rock, pop, soul, jazz, hip hop, electronic music or something completely different, there is always the possibility of finding something that catches your eye.

And that is really the beauty of buying records. You can go into a shop looking for one particular thing and walk out with something completely unexpected.

Why Are the Releases Limited?

Part of the appeal of RSD Black Friday is that the releases are not produced in unlimited quantities.

Limited editions make the records feel like something special. They can give collectors the opportunity to own a particular pressing, format or version that may not be available again.

It also means that, just like Record Store Day in April, there can be a real sense of excitement around the morning itself. You might have a particular release in mind, but you never quite know what else you might discover when you are standing in front of a wall of records.

That element of discovery is a huge part of what makes independent record shops so enjoyable.

Why Independent Record Shops?

At its heart, RSD Black Friday is about independent record shops.

Record Store Day was created to celebrate the unique culture of independent record shops, and more than 300 independent shops across the UK and Ireland take part. These shops are more than somewhere to buy a record. They are places where music fans meet, recommendations are shared and new artists are discovered.

Independent shops also play an important role in their local communities. They give people a reason to browse in person rather than simply clicking a button online.

There is something quite different about flicking through a crate of records, spotting an interesting sleeve, picking it up and having a conversation about it with someone who genuinely loves music.

That experience is difficult to recreate online.

For us, that is a big part of what makes days like RSD Black Friday so special. It is not simply about selling records. It is about bringing people together through music and giving everyone a reason to spend some time in a record shop.

Do I Need to Be a Serious Record Collector?

Absolutely not.

You do not need to have a huge collection at home, a particular turntable or an encyclopaedic knowledge of music to enjoy RSD Black Friday.

You might be someone who has been collecting records for years. You might have only recently bought your first turntable. Or you might simply love music and fancy seeing what is out there.

That is one of the things we love about record shops. There is always something to discover.

You might come in looking for a particular artist and leave with something completely different. You might discover an album that becomes a new favourite. Or you might simply enjoy spending a bit of time looking through the shelves and talking about music.

There is no right way to enjoy records.

How Does RSD Black Friday Work?

The important thing to remember is that RSD Black Friday releases are limited and availability can vary between shops.

At Vinyl Audio Café, over the counter sales will begin at 8am on Friday 27th November 2026.

If there is a particular release you have your eye on, we recommend getting here early. Popular titles can sell quickly, and once a limited release has gone, that may be your chance gone too.

If you cannot make it into the shop, don't worry. Online sales will begin at 8am on Saturday 28th November 2026, giving you another opportunity to pick up any available releases from the comfort of home.

It is also worth remembering that not every independent record shop will carry every release, and quantities are limited. If there is something you really want, it is worth checking the release list beforehand and making a plan for the morning.

But if you do not have a particular record in mind, even better.

Sometimes the best part of an event like this is simply seeing what you find. You might arrive looking for one record and leave with something completely unexpected.
